Courses
Next course: Introduction to Bee Keeping, Sunday 19 January 2025 (TBC) ..see below for more information.
Did you know.........that honey bee colonies consist of a single queen, 100s of male drones and 20,000 to 80,000 female workers. Worker bees get up with the sun, they give themselves a quick clean, stretch their wings, then fly off foraging for food (pollen and nectar). Some workers stay behind and protect the hive, others go out looking for water. On returning to the hive, the worker plops the pollen into a cell, or passes (regurgitates) the nectar to another bee to process and place into a cell. The workers tell each other, by a sun or ‘waggle’ dance, where the best food or water source is so they get the most out of their day. As the sun fades, it is time for the workers to return to the hive and do some housekeeping – cleaning out the cells, doing some hive maintenance and removing debris from other bees ‘coats’. Finally, sleep. As the sun rises the next day, it starts all over again.
